MSI’s automated shovel system offers an alternative to removing tramp metal in your product. If your line offers a difficult application for magnetic perfection, we can help by providing a new automated shovel system. It is a rugged state of the art machine that mounts over the belt at almost any location as long as it is downstream from the metal detector. When the metal detector senses tramp metal in bulk material on the belt, it sends a signal to the automated shovel. When the tramp metal reaches the shovel, it automatically lowers its angled plow blade to flatten the belt and divert the metal along with a small amount of product off the conveyor. Once the tramp metal is discharged, the automated plow is raised to allow for normal material flow. The entire process happens in a matter of seconds.

No More Tough Applications
Is your line speed too fast, burden depth too deep, product density too heavy, are you worried about stainless steel? MSI has the answer. We can use our automated shovel system by itself or in conjunction with one of our powerful overhead magnets. Let us help engineer the best solution for your application.
Automated Shovel System
The Automated Shovel System includes the upper structure and the flattening/slider bed. The upper structure includes the control box, the air tank, the air cylinder, the splash shields and other components. It also includes the plow blade and its supporting structure. This assembly spans above the conveyor belt, with the plow blade facing the tail pulley end of the conveyor. The plow blade will discharge material either to the left or to the right, just specify when ordering.
The flattening/slider bed is a rectangular assembly that replaces the idlers underneath the plow blade and continuously supports the belt. The plow blade flattens the belt against the bed to divert tramp metal off the conveyor. The bed is specially equipped with UHMW to protect the belt and ensure proper flow of material.
Automated Shovel Options
Metal Detector
The automated shovel is engineered to work with any make and model of metal detector. If a new metal detector is needed, however, we can supply you with just the right one to fit your application.
Counter-Balance
The automated shovel system uses compressed air, from either your plant of from its own air compressor, to control its plow blade. The blade will drop at the loss of air pressure. The counter balance is designed to keep the blade in the up position during a loss of air.
On-Site Installation Assistance
The Automated Shovel System is designed for easy installation. However, we can supply supervisory personnel to oversee the installation and start-up of the equipment.
